Historic Attic Renovation

U+B was invited by the owners of this late 19^th century classic Minneapolis lakes home to renovate an existing attic space into an open and inviting home office space.  Early investigations revealed evidence of a fire that had swept through the attic during the late 1930’s and severely compromised the structural integrity of the existing roof and dormers. Working with our engineering team, we were able to integrate a new structural system with much needed insulation and mechanical upgrades to create habitable space. The new renovated attic expanded to create an open floor plan with office space, a living area, a guest bedroom and bathroom.  The new office sits in a new dormer and wraps around the existing chimney which was stripped and cleaned to become a focal point for the space.  The living area is open to light and views on all four sides and includes a built-in bar and a secret storage area hidden behind a swinging bookcase.  A guest bedroom space includes a small dressing area and bathroom. While the open space plan is quite modern the detailing and finishes of the space are appropriate to the period of the house.  Materials include custom wrought iron handrails, conservation red birch floors, white stained fir ceilings and traditional light fixtures.  This renovation is not only appropriate to the interior style of the home but sensitive to the exterior scale as well, integrating beautifully into the character of the original historic home.
