This charming Mediterranean home, built in 1936, was purchased by a couple who fell in love with the detail and character of the well-detailed home. Problematic to the existing space was a highly-compartmentalized floor plan and kitchen that challenged opportunities to open and consolidate living space. Working closely with our client, the U+B team brought an open floor plan into the heart of the house, preserving the unique character and aspects the owners were first attracted to. The resulting gourmet kitchen is flanked by the original barrel-vaulted formal dining room and framed by an addition that connects the house and garden through a new living room and informal dining area. The renovation and addition allowed for the character of the home to be preserved while helping move the program and plan of the home into a more flexible and dynamic space. Focused on future opportunities, the addition is constructed to accommodate a roof deck accessed from the garden and taking advantage of the potential for private outdoor living space adjoining each bedroom.
